Bio

summer of 2014
I’ve been doing a couple different music things. One is playing in a cajun band playing my piano accordion and learning the cajun accordion. We play the 2nd Friday of each month at the Bayou. Doing traditional cajun and zydeco with some blues, country songs in those styles.

I’ve also been playing a solo gig at the Chocolatarian Cafe (not during the summer) playing musette, french, standards and such. Nothing scheduled yet for fall.

I also go to the gypsy jazz open jams at the Brocah on Monroe every Wed. from 8-10. Sitting in with whoever shows up to play standards from the Django repertoire of gypsy swing, french and jazz standards . There is a core group of 3-6 people that show up playing guitar, bass, mandolin, clarinet, another accordion player. There’s a great collection of songs for a free download, called the Django fakebook online.

I’ve been playing about 10 years. Working both hands but still working on more left hand independence. On ongoing skill to work on.
Mostly self taught but I’ve taken some lessons from Dan Newton (Cafe Accordion from Minneapolis) and Stas Venglevski (bayan player from Milwaukee).

summer of 2010
I’ve been playing music since high school. Where I played guitar, piano and  saxophone. I settled on guitar at the time.

I then began playing with a church group, playing with friends, at coffee shops and I moved to Oshkosh, then Madison.

During this time, I listened to a wide range of music from Dylan, folk, Grateful Dead, Reggae, to African.

I joined a Latin folk group in Madison, called Pepes y Los Gringos and was exposed to a number of Latin styles that the band played along with an awareness for social justice issues. The songs were covers and originals written mostly by Ted Kuster. We played for 2 years and recorded 2 albums before splitting up, after most of the members graduated from college.

A few years later, I played with Shakere, playing african music with 7-10 people.

Following that, I played with Nzomo, a trumpet player from Kenya, for a couple years doing covers and his originals, based on his arrangements. I was playing guitar and keyboard.

The last 8 years or so, I’ve been playing piano accordion, focusing on Zydeco, Jazz, latin, french, swing, blues…..    You can do a lot of music on the accordion.
